Toyota Tacoma

Model Overview

Like its global counterpart, the Hilux, the Toyota Tacoma is rugged and capable, especially in the TRD Pro guise. There are two bed lengths, three cab styles, and two powertrain options, giving buyers a number of different combinations to suit their needs.

In production from 1995 to 2004, the first-generation Toyota Tacoma was offered with a choice of two four-cylinder engines — a 2.4-liter or a 2.7-liter — and a 3.4-liter V-6 that could be coupled to a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. Unlike its successors, the first-gen Tacoma was only available with one bed length, but you could choose between two cab styles.

The second-generation Tacoma debuted in 2004 as a 2005 model. A new 4.0-liter V-6 replaces the old 3.4-liter unit but the 2.7-liter I-4 remained as the new base engine since the previous truck’s 2.4-liter was discontinued. Two additional transmission choices, a six-speed manual and a five speed automatic, were added as the choices for the V-6-powered Tacoma. Toyota also added a long-bed variant, in addition to the standard short bed. For this generation, two off-road-oriented variants of the Tacoma were available, the TRD Sport and the TRD Pro and both were available with Bilstein shocks and struts, and a heavy duty high-output alternator. From 2015 and onward, a TRD Pro variant of the Tacoma that features a two-inch front suspension lift, a TRD exhaust system, Bilstein shocks, and all-terrain tires.

Motor Trend presented the second-generation Tacoma with the 2005 Truck of the Year award thanks to its ruggedness. “The new truck proves there is no penalty for buying a reasonably sized, more fuel-efficient truck, especially significant in this time of rising fuel prices. We call that a superior combination and worthy of the mantle, Motor Trend Truck of the Year,” we said.

The Latest Generation

Toyota introduced the third-generation Tacoma at 2015 Detroit auto show as a 2016 model. The 2.7-liter I-4 remains as the base engine but the 4.0-liter V-6 has been replaced by a 3.5-liter unit with Toyota’s D-4S direct- and port-injection system, with 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual is standard on four-cylinder equipped trucks and V-6-powered models come with a six-speed unit. All variants are available with a six-speed automatic, which replace the previous truck’s four- and five-speed units. The TRD Pro variant returned for the 2017 model year as the range-topping model of the Tacoma lineup.

In a 2016 First Test. we noted that that Tacoma’s six-speed automatic shifts quick but is prone to hunt for gears. Fit and finish inside the Tacoma’s cabin, on the other hand, is much improved compared to its predecessor.

Why You’d Consider One

Thanks to its reputation for reliability and durability, the Toyota Tacoma is a good choice if you want to keep your truck for a long time, and TRD Pro models should work if you also want a midsize truck with great off-road capability.

Why You’d Look Elsewhere

The Toyota Tacoma isn’t offered with a diesel like rivals Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. meaning it won’t be as fuel efficient nor will it offer as much torque for hauling and towing.

Body Types: Truck
