Google and Mozilla create P2P video conferencing clients with WebRTC

SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS Google and Mozilla have shown off video conferencing using WebRTC between the Chrome and Firefox web browsers.

Last year Mozilla showed off WebRTC by demonstrating video conferencing on its Firefox web browser linked to its Social API. Now Google has joined Mozilla in demonstrating peer-to-peer (P2P) video conferencing between the Firefox and Chrome web browsers using WebRTC.

Mozilla said WebRTC’s Peerconnection interface allows applications to make P2P audio and video connections without having to install plugins. Google’s Chrome 25 web browser, which is now in beta, has implemented WebRTC allowing users to set up connections with Firefox and other WebRTC enabled applications.

Google said all audio and video connections are encrypted using open audio and video codecs such as Opus and VP8, respectively. Both Google and Mozilla are working with the W3C and IETF to develop WebRTC, and although it is still work in progress, the applications that are being developed to demonstrate its capabilities show that WebRTC can mean an end to having to download plugins and add-ons.

WebRTC developers are getting greater access to low-level hardware capabilities, allowing for development of rich applications without the need for downloading applications and plugins. While Google and Mozilla claim this will enable easier use of media rich applications, it will place greater emphasis on web browser security in order to sandbox such applications.

Psychiatric Impacts of Video Games, Internet Addiction on Children #addiction #to #video #games #treatment

Psychiatric Impacts of Video Games, Internet Addiction on Children

Thomas is a 14-year-old boy in psychiatric treatment for depression and anxiety. Although his symptoms have partially responded to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and medication, Thomas continues to experience self described “panic attacks” that occur only at school.

When not at school, Thomas spends essentially all of his time on the Internet, playing video games and on Facebook. He spends anywhere between five and 10 hours online on an average day, going to bed at 3 a.m. frequently. Weekends are worse. Thomas consistently chooses video games and the Internet over other activities and insists that his involvement with these activities is “normal” despite significant difficulties with school attendance, academic performance, and peer relationships.

His parents eventually enroll him in an online school to manage the school problems. Despite multiple attempts and promises to decrease his use, Thomas continues to incessantly be online, mostly playing video games on his computer and smartphone.

The above scenario is an excerpt from a real case. Unfortunately, Thomas is one of the many teenagers in the U.S. and globally, who suffer from Internet and gaming addiction. Prevalence rates range between 1 and 18% worldwide 1. with females showing a significantly lower rate of addiction (up to 10 times lower). In the U.S. they range anywhere between 1.5 and 8.2% 13. with 97% of all teenagers in the U.S. playing video games for recreation 3 .

Moreover, survey data from a few years ago has shown the growth of general Internet usage at a rate of 25% every 3 months, with almost 90% of all Americans now connected to the Internet 4. According to recent statistics, young males primarily plays sports games (such as FIFA/soccer) and combative games (e.g. Call of Duty), with music simulation (e.g. Guitar Hero) and life management games (such as The Sims) being less popular. In females, these ratios are essentially reversed 2.

The DSM-V has proposed “Internet Gaming Disorder” as the diagnosis for teens such as Thomas, and describes it as a “persistent and recurrent use of the Internet to engage in games,” leading to psychosocial problems and withdrawal symptoms, such as irritability, anxiety and sadness (akin to gambling and substance abuse) when Internet access is denied 6 .

Although initially humorously described by Ivan Goldberg in 1995 11,12. it has become clearer in the last few years that Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) entails significant deleterious effects for our youth. In addition to excessive Internet use and possible addiction, children and adolescents are now increasingly exposed to online risks such as gambling, pornography, sexual solicitation and harassment (cyberbullying).

In addition to IAD, several other terms have been used interchangeably to describe overuse of the Internet, such as Compulsive Internet Use (CIU), Problematic Internet Usage (PIU) and Pathological Internet Use (PtIU) 7. Recent studies from China on elementary school children have shown a correlation between PIU and the symptoms of ADHD. such as a lack of focus 9. Additionally, there is increasing interest in exploring possible links between video games and psychiatric disorders such as bipolar disorder, depression and social anxiety 1,10.

There has been considerable research on the possible impact of violent video games with consistent hypothesis that playing these types of games may contribute to aggressive behavior and personality styles through role modeling, reducing feelings of empathy and increasing tolerance to violent thoughts, images and scripts 5. Recent studies have shown that overuse of most media (Internet, video games, mobile phones) may play a role in the increased incidence of depression and social anxiety in the adolescent population 1,10.

International studies have proposed a genetic link between PIU and depression by identifying anomalies in the serotonin transporter genes in such individuals, whereas others have shown a correlation between PIU and low emotional intelligence 7 and impulsivity 8.

8/4/2017 12:35:01 PM

Lesson One: Why Choose Wellness Coaching?

Wellness coaching is a relatively new phenomenon. Not only can students benefit from applying the basics of wellness coaching to their own lives, but they can take what they know and funnel it into a new career.

  • Lesson Two: Your First Client is You

In wellness coaching, the first and most important client is always you. Clients will pick up on your balance, your energy, your wellness. You are not going to sell them on your services if you do not practice what you preach.

  • Lesson Three: How Do I Know if It Is Working?

What does it mean to have a goal? If you have a goal to change your physical wellness, how will you know if you are successful? Is it a feeling? Is it something more tangible?

  • Lesson Four: Fact Versus Fiction in Wellness Coaching

Since wellness coaching is a still-developing career, coaches and clients may be uncertain about what can be accomplished. This lesson will separate fact from fiction, as well as clue you in to untold client expectations.

  • Lesson Five: Why We Get Stuck and How to Get Going Again

At some point, either the coach or the client will get stuck. It is a phase and it can be beneficial. But there are some tips for getting through this time and learning from it.

  • Lesson Six: Body Wellness

It seems obvious–eat well, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep–for good health. Body wellness also includes respect, trust, education, and a bit of objectivity.

  • Lesson Seven: Mind Wellness

Mind wellness is more than mental health. It is positivity, it is attitude, and it is acknowledging that each of your five senses contributes to wellness. Creativity is also an important element to mind wellness and it exists in everyone.

  • Lesson Eight: Spiritual Wellness

Not every client will want or need to address spiritual wellness. Not every coach will want to address the topic. This lesson simply presents the basics of spirituality in wellness coaching; the rest is up to client and coach.

  • Lesson Nine: Economic Wellness

This lesson is about letting go of the white picket fence dream, forgetting about keeping up with the Johnsons, and finding how economic wellness complements other areas of wellness.

  • Lesson 10: Staying Balanced in Times of Crisis

Times of crisis are so stressful and all-consuming that it is easy to lose focus. Through the lens of crisis, everything looks bigger and more impossible to handle.

  • Lesson 11: Ethics of Wellness Coaching

In the future, it is expected that different areas of coaching will have ethical codes. For the time being, this is at the wellness coach’s discretion.

  • Lesson 12: Business Strategies for Wellness Coaching

Few wellness coaches will be able to start by hanging their shingle outside the door. While an office is not necessary for successful coaching practices, some sort of business strategy or plan will be.
