Tuskegee University VET-STEP

VETERINARY SCIENCE TRAINING EDUCATION AND PREPARATION INSTITUTE (VET STEP)

The Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine s Veterinary Science Training, Education and Preparation Institute (VET STEP) is a one-week residential program designed to introduce minority high school students to veterinary medicine. Students attend stimulating academic classes, participate in hands-on activities and laboratory exercises, prepare presentations, engage in stimulating discussions, and take part in fieldtrips.

Students completing the 8th and 9th grades with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 are invited to apply.

Participants are required to stay on the Tuskegee University campus for the entire program. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from Tuskegee. Classroom instruction is from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There are also regularly scheduled activities from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. for the evenings. VET STEP begins with Orientation and check-in on Sunday and ends on Saturday with the closing program that highlights participant’s presentation and awards. Fieldtrips are on Friday.

Minority students (GPA 2.7 for VET STEP I and 3.0 for VET STEP II) currently enrolled in 8th through 11th grades at the time of application.

If you have already attended VET-STEP I or II, you may not attend VET-STEP I or II, again. However, if you have successfully completed VET-STEP I, you may apply for VET-STEP II.

Completed applications may be submitted online beginning January 1, 2017. The deadline for application is March 31, 2017. Early applications are encouraged. Please do not submit applications and related materials in binders, folders or other document presentation devices. The following materials must be included in all applications.

1. Two letters of recommendation, one from a science teacher and one from a counselor. In addition to the two required, a letter of recommendation may also be submitted from a veterinarian.

2. Complete official transcript that verifies G.P.A. Please do not send grade reports.

3. A two hundred (200) word, typed, double-spaced using 12 font, signed essay entitled, Why I Want to be a Veterinarian.

4. Parental Consent form. Complete the Consent form online, print, sign, date, and mail to above address.

Selection Process: The selection committee will review the applications after the deadline, and notify each applicant of their decision. Applicants will be placed into three categories: accepted, alternate, or declined. Accepted applicants will be given three weeks to return their confirmation packet, which includes specific VET-STEP information and the Tuskegee University health form. If any accepted student does not meet the return packet deadline, then his/her VET-STEP position is forfeited and offered to the next person on the alternate list.

The VET-STEP Institutes are rigorous, dynamic programs, costing only $500.00 per session. This intensive professional school preparation offered at Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine should be undertaken by those students who are committed to meeting the challenges of a diverse health profession.
