We, the undersigned, are employees of tech organizations and companies based in the United States. We are engineers, designers, business executives, and others whose jobs include managing or processing data about people. We are choosing to stand in solidarity with Muslim Americans, immigrants, and all people whose lives and livelihoods are threatened by the incoming administration s proposed data collection policies. We refuse to build a database of people based on their Constitutionally-protected religious beliefs. We refuse to facilitate mass deportations of people the government believes to be undesirable.

We have educated ourselves on the history of threats like these, and on the roles that technology and technologists played in carrying them out. We see how IBM collaborated to digitize and streamline the Holocaust. contributing to the deaths of six million Jews and millions of others. We recall the internment of Japanese Americans during the Second World War. We recognize that mass deportations precipitated the very atrocity the word genocide was created to describe: the murder of 1.5 million Armenians in Turkey. We acknowledge that genocides are not merely a relic of the distant past among others, Tutsi Rwandans and Bosnian Muslims have been victims in our lifetimes.

Today we stand together to say: not on our watch, and never again.

We commit to the following actions:

  • We refuse to participate in the creation of databases of identifying information for the United States government to target individuals based on race, religion, or national origin.
  • We will advocate within our organizations:
    • to minimize the collection and retention of data that would facilitate ethnic or religious targeting.
    • to scale back existing datasets with unnecessary racial, ethnic, and national origin data.
    • to responsibly destroy high-risk datasets and backups.
    • to implement security and privacy best practices, in particular, for end-to-end encryption to be the default wherever possible.
    • to demand appropriate legal process should the government request that we turn over user data collected by our organization, even in small amounts.
  • If we discover misuse of data that we consider illegal or unethical in our organizations:
    • We will work with our colleagues and leaders to correct it.
    • If we cannot stop these practices, we will exercise our rights and responsibilities to speak out publicly and engage in responsible whistleblowing without endangering users.
    • If we have the authority to do so, we will use all available legal defenses to stop these practices.
    • If we do not have such authority, and our organizations force us to engage in such misuse, we will resign from our positions rather than comply.
  • We will raise awareness and ask critical questions about the responsible and fair use of data and algorithms beyond our organization and our industry.

Carolyn’s sister Lizzy is celebrating her birthday, but we’re investigating a crime. We returned home to find Lizzy’s party set-up trashed. The cake was half-eaten, presents were thrown all over, and there was even some bright red stuff dripping off the table. This is clearly a birthday whodunit. Our question: How can we use forensic science to finger the culprit?

What did we do?
There were a lot of possibilities for the bandit: our dad, neighbor, Lizzy, and even a balloon-delivery clown were suspects. We found fiber, saliva, and fingerprint samples at the crime scene, so we gathered hair, saliva and fingerprint samples from each suspect. Then we compared the crime scene evidence to our samples and tried to find a match. We also interviewed all the suspects.

What did we find out?
We found fingerprints at the scene for everybody except the clown, so that didn’t narrow things down much. We had a hard time telling the fibers apart under the microscope, but we used a laser pen to estimate the thickness of each fiber. The crime scene fiber didn’t match any of our suspects! Lastly, Kalia’s cousin helped us with DNA testing for the saliva samples, but the crime scene sample proved to be non-human! After asking questions and recreating the scene, Lizzy confessed to breaking into her presents, but the fiber and DNA evidence pointed to a new and FURRY suspect. It was Sammy the family dog who ate the cake!

What can you do?

  • Practice lifting fingerprints like the CSIs do! Using an artist’s paint brush and some dust from a charcoal briquette, apply a light coating of charcoal dust to a surface with fingerprints. Use clear packaging tape to “lift” any prints you see off the glass, then stick the tape onto white paper. You’ve just captured a fingerprint!
  • Ride your bike through some soft sand, and examine the tire tread pattern that is left behind. How does the pattern change if the tires are under-inflated?
  • One kind of forensic analysis involves splashes and splatters. Fill up some water balloons, and throw them at a dry and level paved surface. What distinguishes the splatter of a balloon that falls straight down, compared to one that hits at an angle?

    Many a parent will take his or her child to the emergency or a Cleveland urgent care facility wondering if his or her son or daughter has asthma. Asthma is chronic disease with no cure that affects the airways. The airways constrict after allergens or other aerial irritants have caused the throat to become sore or swollen. Parents can hear this as the decrease in the amount of air getting to the lungs causes wheezing, coughing, tightness in the chest, and trouble breathing in general.

    You may be wondering if your child has this condition. Parents can look for those symptoms in the last paragraph, but sometimes it is easy to misread the common cold for the condition. They should also pay attention to the timing of these symptoms. If they occur at night or early in the morning this could be a tell tale sign of asthma. The same applies if the child has a cold that lasts longer than 10 days. In the event that your child presents this myriad of symptoms then it is advisable that you take them to a check out at a hospital of urgent care facility.

    Most of the time asthma is a difficult diagnosis to make. These flair ups may provide the clues, but so will regular checkups. A pediatrician or medical professional will most likely discover this chronic disease through regular checkups. The doctor will perform test with regards to lung capacity and check for allergies.

    This is the first step. Next the doctor will most likely ask a few questions. They will wonder if the breathing problems are worse after exercise or perhaps during certain times of the year. Family history is also important. If a previous family relative has had asthma, it is very likely that the child has developed the condition. Of course, while being aware of these symptoms is important, it is important to allow the medical professional perform the diagnosis.

    Luckily, asthma is a condition that can be treated with a variety of medications. Quick-relief medications are reactive measures that work once an asthma attack is happening. If the child needs to use the quick-relief medications often, especially for a single attack, then a long term medication may be required. The long term medication will decrease the number of attacks or decrease the intensity of the attacks. The long term medications are preventive in nature and will not help in the moment of an asthma attack.

    Children with asthma do not need to rely on the medication as a crutch though. They can simply learn to avoid the asthma triggers. This is a preventive measure that does not necessitate a pill or inhaler. Either way, asthma is a chronic disease that may incurable, but is hardly impossible to live with. Parents should learn all they can by visiting websites like WebMD.com or www.nih.com or by setting an appointment at a local Cleveland urgent care center or hospital if you fear your child has asthma. In the case of an emergency, you should take your child to the emergency room.

    A change in the color of lips and finger nails to blue or gray, the visibility of pulling beneath the skin between the base of the neck and the ribs while they breathe, or a severe asthma attack that does not dissipate after 5 to 10 minutes are examples of possible asthmatic emergencies.

    Great Oaks accepts Visa, Master Card, and Discover.

    Can I pay fees or tool kit expenses using this system?

    The EZpay system is currently used just for payments to lunch account. Other fees and payments should be made using cash or check to the school office.

    Will I get notice about a low lunch balance?

    Yes, when any member of your family gets below $15.00 you will get an email. Please be sure you do not have a SPAM blocker on for SPS EZpay. At any time you can opt out of receiving these emails.

    What Browser should I use?

    EZpay easily works with Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Netscape.

    Am I still able to pay by check and cash?

    Absolutely, just as you have done in the past.

    How do I make a payment?

    It’s easy to make payments on our website. If this is your first time you are making a payment, just follow these three easy steps:

    You will be asked for your e-mail address and a password to register yourself as a customer.     Nursing Application Requirements

    The Nursing program is competitive and there are prerequisites and application requirements.

    The application deadline for the Fall 2017 Nursing class was January 7, 2017.

    The Fall 2017 Nursing class has been selected and is full.

    Students who meet the prerequisite course work and GPA requirement may submit a late application through July 31, 2017. Late applications may be reviewed in the event there is an opening for the Fall 2017 class and the alternate list has been exhausted.

    It is important to note, late applications may not be reviewed and will not generate subsequent notification regarding application status. In the event that a late applicant is selected to fill a vacancy they will be notified as soon as possible. Notification could take place up until the start of classes.

    We will begin accepting applications for the Fall 2018 Nursing program starting on September 18, 2017. The application deadline will be January 12, 2018.

    Spring 2018 (LPN, Transfer, Readmits only)

    Please read the admission requirements below before completing the Spring Online Application for Nursing. If you meet the required prerequisites you may proceed with the application process. Along with the online nursing application you must submit the Online Supporting Documentation Form. You will need electronic copies of your transcripts for this portion of the application process. You will also need one Reference Form submitted on your behalf. The application deadline is August 7, 2017.

    Students who do not fulfill all items outlined in the Nursing Application Supporting Documentation Packet are encouraged to begin work on the prerequisite requirements by applying for the Health Studies program using the General Application for admission.

    Applicants who have not completed pre-requisites by the application deadline will not be reviewed. Incomplete Applications will not be processed.

    PRE-REQUISITES AND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NURSING PROGRAM

    Please note: A course syllabus/transcript, description, and grading scale must be provided for agencies other than accredited colleges.

    • Proof of graduation from high school or General Equivelency Diploma

    Outlined below are courses that meet the algebra, biology and chemistry prerequisites for the Nursing Program.

    High School Courses that meet the prerequisite requirements:

    • High school Integrated Algebra or its equivalent completed within the last five years with a grade of “C” or above.
    • High school Regents Biology completed within the last five years with a grade of “B” or above and a Regents exam score of 80% or above.
    • High school Regents Chemistry completed within the last five years with a grade of “B” or above and a Regents exam score of 80% or above.
    • A minimum cumulative high school average of 85%.

    College Courses that meet the prerequisite requirements:

    • College MAT 040 Elementary Algebra with a grade of “C” or above, or course equivalency.
    • College level biology with a grade of “B” or above (SCI 135 Introductory to Biology-Molecules/Cells, SCI 136 Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology or SCI 137 Human Biology).
    • College level Chemistry with a grade of “B-” or above (SCI 170 Introductory Chemistry I).
    • College GPA of 2.8 is required to be considered for admission.

    Please note:
    1) If college courses were completed those scores will be used.
    2) Upper-level courses cannot be used to meet prerequisite course requirements. i.e. Statistics, Anatomy Physiology and Microbiology will not be looked at in place of Algebra and Intro to Biology.

    • Completion of all recommended skills remediation in identified areas.

    Students accepted to the Nursing Program must submit proof of American Heart Association adult and pediatric CPR certification and Health form prior to the start of the Nursing Program.

    Nursing Program Requirements:
    The nursing program or its affiliate clinical agencies may require background checks and drug screenings. Failure to pass one or more of these checks/screenings will mean that the student will not be allowed to attend clinical lab. Clinical lab is a required course component. Thus, the student will be unable to meet the course requirements and must withdraw from the program.

    R.N. License Requirements:
    Graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination, NCLEX/RN, for licensure as a registered professional nurse. Candidates for licensure must meet all requirements as determined by the New York State Education Department. In applying for licensure, you must answer the following question: “Have you ever been found guilty after trial, or pleaded guilty, no contest, or nolo contendere to a crime (felony or misdemeanor) in any court?” You may be prohibited from obtaining a license related to any convictions. Contact NY State Education Department’s Office of the Professions at www.op.nysed.gov or 518-474-3817, ext. 570 for further information.

    The Licensed Practical Nurse Applicant Advanced Placement Credit:

    • The individual must have met the same pre-requisites for entrance as the general admit student outlined above.
    • The individual must hold a current New York State License for Practical Nurses.
    • If a graduate of the HFM Counties BOCES Practical Nursing Program, the individual must have attained an average of 85% or higher. Transcripts from other programs will be evaluated on an individual basis.
    • Completion of 4 credits of college level Anatomy Physiology (BIO 181) with a minimal grade of “C” course must be no more than seven years old and 3 credits of General Psychology (PSY 101) with a minimal grade of “C” before entrance to NUR 106.

    Accepted Students must successfully complete Nursing Process (1 institutional non-degree credit) Course offered at Fulton-Montgomery Community College before admittance into NUR 106. This is a prerequisite for his/her entrance into NUR 106. This course will be offered in the January term.

    Final decisions as to granting prior FM credits, transfer credits, or equivalencies will be made by the Dean of Academic Affairs in consultation with the Nursing Selection Committee.

    Co-requisites for NUR 105

    Concurrent registration in, or prior completion of 4 credits of Anatomy Physiology (BIO 181) (with a grade of “C” or above and not more than 7 years old) and 3 credits of General Psychology (PSY 101) (with a grade of “C” or above)

    Co-requisites for NUR 106

    Concurrent registration in, or prior completion of 4 credits of Anatomy Physiology II (BIO 182) (with a grade of “C” or above and not more than 7 years old) and 3 credits of Developmental Psychology (PSY 200) (with a grade of “C” or above)

    Granting of Prior FM Credit or Transfer Credit

    • The individual must have met the same pre-requisites for entrance as the general admit student outlined above.
    • Transfer students from other collegiate nursing programs are evaluated on an individual basis. Transfer students must submit a written request to the Associate Dean for Enrollment Management specifically identifying factors that will improve performance and enhance success.
    • Prior FM credit or transfer credit will not be granted for college level Anatomy Physiology I II, and Microbiology if the courses are more than seven years old.
    • Pharmacology must be taken after completion of NUR 105 and NUR 106 and within 12 months of graduation.
    • A student must obtain a minimal grade of “C” in Anatomy Physiology and Microbiology Courses to be eligible for advancement to the next level nursing course.
    • Ordinarily, transfer credit will not be granted for Nursing Science courses. Since college nursing courses are not standardized as to content for each semester, each candidate’s records must be examined individually. Typically transfer credit will only be given for Nursing Science I.
    • Final decisions as to prior FM or transfer credits will be made by the Dean of Academic Affairs in consultation with the Nursing Selection Committee.

    In addition to the Online Nursing Application, a student seeking readmission must submit a written request to the Associate Dean for Recruitment and Admission specifically identifying factors that will improve performance and enhance success. Readmission students must provide one new professional reference. The Nursing Selection Committee will review the request. Click here to review the Readmission Policy .
