Linux Desktop Email Clients Compared: Thunderbird vs. Evolution vs. KMail vs. Claws Mail

Looking for a Linux email client? Here s a breakdown comparing the four best options.

Webmail use is still on the rise, and it s not hard to understand why. There s Gmail s webmail-specific features, the ability to always see all of your email, and the convenience of viewing your email anywhere with just a browser and login credentials are just a few reasons why people have made email clients (outside of enterprise environments) almost obsolete.

These advantages aside, there are still enough reasons to use a desktop email client as well. Some include desktop integration features such as system notifications for new emails (this is most common on Linux, anyways), offline email management (especially if you don t use Gmail with Google Chrome), and integrated encryption support.

While Linux isn t graced with the presence of all email clients (I m looking at you, Postbox), there are still more than enough options to satisfy the average email user. I compared the top four choices Thunderbird, Evolution, KMail, and Claws Mail to see what type of users they cater to.


Thunderbird is the most common email client for practically any operating system. Developed by Mozilla, Thunderbird hasn t actually seen any recent major updates because Mozilla has shifted most of its development efforts to Firefox. This could be attributed to the gradual decline of email client use or a simple lack of innovative new ideas to be implemented into an email client. While Google has been innovating email with features such as Priority Inbox, they require a lot of processing power, along with proprietary algorithms, that desktop email clients like Thunderbird can t use. The software still gets security updates (the version at time of writing is 17.0.8), but there hasn t been a new major release in a while.

Thunderbird provides great features, such as an easy setup wizard (which usually guesses all the correct settings using only your email address and password), a great extensions system that cannot be rivaled, and a high level of customizability.

While Thunderbird is simply a respectable email client with its base features, it really flourishes once you add some extensions. Some of my favorites include extensions that add GPG/PGP email encryption, a visual thread view of email threads, and Lightning which adds calendar support to Thunderbird.

Ubuntu users can enjoy desktop integration with Thunderbird thanks to some self-developed packages Thunderbird is Ubuntu s default email client. Users of other distributions will have to find their own solutions or miss out on desktop support.


Evolution is the default email client for most Gnome-based distributions. As mentioned above, some distributions like Ubuntu have other default preferences (like Thunderbird), but any distribution which sticks to pure Gnome experiences will include Evolution. Fedora, openSUSE, and Debian are great example distributions where this is the case. Either way, if Evolution isn t installed on your system, you can easily find it in your respective package manager.

While Evolution was previously known to be slow and buggy, it improved quite a bit over the lifespan of Gnome 3. It includes support for all major email protocols, as well as fairly decent support for Exchange servers (a feat none of the other three email clients listed here can claim). It also has an easy-to-use interface (in my opinion it looks somewhat similar to Outlook), and support for calendars, task lists, and memos/notes without the need for extensions.

While certainly customizable, it isn t nearly as customizable as Thunderbird. My primary reason for saying this is that Thunderbird does an excellent job of letting you choose different settings for each mail account that you have configured. Evolution s settings, by way of contrast, apply to all mail accounts which is an issue if you want , say, one account s replies be written at the bottom instead of the top. It is a very solid choice for a desktop email client.


KMail, similarly to Evolution, is the default email client for the KDE desktop environment Enjoy A Clean, Improved Desktop With KDE 4.7 [Linux] Enjoy A Clean, Improved Desktop With KDE 4.7 [Linux] One of Linux’s most popular desktop environments, KDE, released their latest series (version 4.7) at the end of July. While the interface isn t quite as friendly as Thunderbird or Evolution, the application is still very functional and configurable. It also supports all of the major email protocols, so you shouldn t have any issues with getting started with KMail. Claws Mail

Claws Mail is an email client found as the default in a number of lightweight distributions. Compared to the other three options, Claws Mail is by far the most resource-friendly email client and it shows. While the application is still quite functional, the interface looks simpler and stripped down and features like easy setup aren t present.

Even the icons seem like they would be more appropriate for the 90 s, but then again functionality is more important than looks for some people (especially the resource-conscious ones). Claws Mail continues that simplicity by only showing email in plain text (I m sure as a security measure). However, Claws Mail does allow for plugins which can be installed via available packages and loaded via Configurations Plugins. It still supports POP3, IMAP, and SMTP, so it s a great quick choice if you like and/or need a solution like this.

Looking through your respective package manager with the search term claws should lead you to a Claws Mail package that includes the application. You can also install other plugins that may pop up in the list, but none are required. Just know that if you do install any that you also need to load them while inside Claws Mail as outlined above.


My ultimate winner is Thunderbird mainly for its large user base and an extensions system that give it all sorts of extra features. However, I d easily recommend any of these email clients. The only situations I wouldn t recommend would be to install Evolution on a KDE system or KMail on a Gnome system. Otherwise, feel free to install whatever you like.

Microsoft Word 2010 has simplified the steps for creating a mail merge. A mail merge is a tool for generating mass mailings, such as form letters. Mail merges contain unique data, such as names and addresses, as well as information that is standard throughout each document. For example, you might use a mail merge to send customers information about a new product or sale, print mailing labels, appointment reminders, or payment due reminders.

You have three different items that come into play with a mail merge: v

  • A data file where your recipients are stored,
  • A merge document where you design your merge,
  • Finished documents combine the data from your data file with the text in your merge document to create individual documents for the recipients.

Now that you have selected your document type, you need to tell Word where the data is stored. To do this, you connect your main document to your data file. You can select to use Outlook contacts, create a new list, or connect to an existing list, such as an Excel spreadsheet or a database.

  1. Click the drop-down menu on the Select Recipients button on the Mailings tab in the Start Mail Merge section.
  1. SelectType New List . Use Existing List . or Select from Outlook Contacts. .
  • If typing a new list, enter your data and save the file.
  • If connecting to an existing list, navigate to where the list is saved and select it.
  • If choosing Outlook Contacts, select the contact list.

This is where you get to pick and choose who to add. You can sort your recipient list, filter to select records and find duplicate recipients.

To sort the recipients by a single column. click the column heading. For example, click Last Name to sort the recipients by last name.

To sort recipients by multiple columns. click Sort and pick your columns, for example, Last Name, First Name.

To filter the list. click the drop down-drown on the column and remove the selection checks for the names you do not want included.

For a more advanced filter, select Filter and enter multiple criteria, for example, State is equal KS will only merge recipients that live in Kansas.

To remove duplicate recipients. click Find Duplicates . If duplicate entries are found, remove the selection checks from the names you do not want included.

Now that you have completed setting up your data source and your main document, you are ready to create your documents.

  1. Click the drop-down menu on the Finish and Merge button on the Mailings tab in the Finish section.
  2. Select Edit Individual Documents to create a file that you can edit and save.
  3. Select Print Documents to send the merged documents directly to a printer.
  4. Select Send E-mail Messages to send an e-mail message to all of the recipients.

Canada’s big banks followed the Bank of Canada’s interest rate cut, lowering their prime lending rates in a series of moves that nonetheless reinforce the reluctance of lenders to follow the central bank in lockstep.

Toronto-Dominion Bank initially decreased its prime rate – the benchmark for creditworthy borrowers – to 2.75 per cent, down 0.10 percentage points. Royal Bank of Canada, Bank of Montreal, Bank of Nova Scotia and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce responded on Wednesday evening, reducing theirs by 0.15 points to 2.70 per cent from 2.85 per cent. That’s a shallower reduction than the central bank’s 0.25-point cut. TD then matched the lower prime rates with an additional cut.

This marks the second time this year that Bay Street has taken a more cautious approach to their lending rates after the central bank has slashed its benchmark in response to disappointing economic activity.

Overall, banks have lowered their prime rates by a total of 0.3 percentage points this year, or nearly half the Bank of Canada’s total reduction of 0.50 points over the same period.

Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz appeared unconcerned by the banks’ response, noting that lending rates can be affected by many factors beyond official monetary policy.

“That’s how financial markets work,” Mr. Poloz said at a press conference. “All we’re trying to do is have an influence on [the lending rate], as opposed to determine it.”

After the Bank of Canada cut its key rate in January, also by a quarter point, the big banks were slow in responding to the surprise move.

When they did react, they took a public drubbing over their refusal to respond with an equal reduction in their prime rates, decreasing them by just 0.15 points.

However, some observers have pointed out that the Bank of Canada may not mind the muted response from the banks.

House prices have soared as borrowing costs have fallen, raising concerns that prices may be overvalued by as much as 30 per cent, according to Bank of Canada estimates. As well, Canadian indebtedness has risen to new heights, making consumers vulnerable to rising unemployment levels or an eventual ramp-up in borrowing costs.

For the banks themselves, the response to the Bank of Canada comes as they attempt to shore up profits driven by their lending activities.

Since the banks make money by lending at higher rates than their own borrowing costs, substantially lower prime rates can compress the spread, or net interest margins.

“We are in such an unusually low-interest-rate environment that the traditional rules of one-for-one [reductions in the prime rate and the Bank of Canada’s key interest rate] don’t work,” Peter Routledge, an analyst at National Bank Financial, said in an interview.

He pointed out that the net interest margin for the Canadian personal and commercial banking operations of the Big Six banks have declined to a weighted average of just 2.48 per cent from 2.73 per cent in 2010. Less than a decade ago, the margin was a far more robust 3 per cent.

Although Canadian banks have increased their overall profits over this period, their share prices have recently been struggling to keep up with the broader market, reflecting investor concerns that earnings growth is being challenged.

“We anticipate that the market’s outlook for growth will moderate further in 2016, encapsulating an even greater slowdown in loan growth and incremental margin pressures,” John Aiken, an analyst at Barclays, said in a note.

Mr. Routledge thinks the banks may also be maintaining higher prime rates, relative to the Bank of Canada’s key rate, out of concerns about credit risk.

“If the economy is slowing so much that the Bank of Canada has cut its policy rate in half” – to 0.5 per cent from 1 per cent in January – “maybe households in particular are not as creditworthy as consensus believes,” he said.

“If that’s the case, you want to put in a little more spread for taking credit risk.”

What is a Mail Server?

With the click of a mouse button, you can send an email from one point of the globe to another in a matter of seconds. Most of us take this process for granted, giving little thought to how it actually works. It’s easy to understand how standard snail-mail gets from point A to point B – but how does an email message make its way from a sender to a recipient? The answer to that question revolves around something called a mail server. You can learn more about the role that mail serves play in email delivery by reading on below.

What is a Mail Server?

A mail server is the computerized equivalent of your friendly neighborhood mailman. Every email that is sent passes through a series of mail servers along its way to its intended recipient. Although it may seem like a message is sent instantly – zipping from one PC to another in the blink of an eye – the reality is that a complex series of transfers takes place. Without this series of mail servers, you would only be able to send emails to people whose email address domains matched your own – i.e. you could only send messages from one account to another account.

Types of Mail Servers

Mail servers can be broken down into two main categories: outgoing mail servers and incoming mail servers. Outgoing mail servers are known as SMTP. or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, servers. Incoming mail servers come in two main varieties. POP3. or Post Office Protocol, version 3, servers are best known for storing sent and received messages on PCs’ local hard drives. IMAP. or Internet Message Access Protocol, servers always store copies of messages on servers. Most POP3 servers can store messages on servers, too, which is a lot more convenient.

The Process of Sending an Email

Now that you know the basics about incoming and outgoing mail servers, it will be easier to understand the role that they play in the emailing process. The basic steps of this process are outlined below for your convenience.

Step #1: After composing a message and hitting send, your email client – whether it’s Outlook Express or Gmail – connects to your domain’s SMTP server. This server can be named many things; a standard example would be

Step #2: Your email client communicates with the SMTP server, giving it your email address, the recipient’s email address, the message body and any attachments.

Step #3: The SMTP server processes the recipient’s email address – especially its domain. If the domain name is the same as the sender’s, the message is routed directly over to the domain’s POP3 or IMAP server – no routing between servers is needed. If the domain is different, though, the SMTP server will have to communicate with the other domain’s server.

Step #4: In order to find the recipient’s server, the sender’s SMTP server has to communicate with the DNS, or Domain Name Server. The DNS takes the recipient’s email domain name and translates it into an IP address. The sender’s SMTP server cannot route an email properly with a domain name alone; an IP address is a unique number that is assigned to every computer that is connected to the Internet. By knowing this information, an outgoing mail server can perform its work more efficiently.

Step #5: Now that the SMTP server has the recipient’s IP address, it can connect to its SMTP server. This isn’t usually done directly, though; instead, the message is routed along a series of unrelated SMTP servers until it arrives at its destination.

Step #6: The recipient’s SMTP server scans the incoming message. If it recognizes the domain and the user name, it forwards the message along to the domain’s POP3 or IMAP server. From there, it is placed in a sendmail queue until the recipient’s email client allows it to be downloaded. At that point, the message can be read by the recipient.

How Email Clients are Handled

Many people use web-based email clients, like Yahoo Mail and Gmail. Those who require a lot more space – especially businesses – often have to invest in their own servers. That means that they also have to have a way of receiving and transmitting emails, which means that they need to set up their own mail servers. To that end, programs like Postfix and Microsoft Exchange are two of the most popular options. Such programs facilitate the preceding process behind the scenes. Those who send and receive messages across those mail servers, of course, generally only see the “send” and “receive” parts of the process.

At the end of the day, a mail server is a computer that helps move files along to their intended destinations. In this case, of course, those files are email messages. As easy as they are to take for granted, it’s smart to have a basic grasp of how mail servers work.

Export From Outlook 2011 Mac Import .eml Files Into Apple Mail

It seems in Outlook 2011 SP1 (14.1), Microsoft re-added the .mbox export feature, which previously was deprecated from Entourage.

It is now possible to simply drag an Outlook 2011 folder from the list to your desktop, and have an importable Apple Mail .mbox.

Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac was supposed to be the most compatible release for Mac but not necessarily the most open. Microsoft removed folder-dragging mbox exports in Outlook 2011, leaving only an export to a proprietary Outlook 2011 .olm file. This essentially locks the e-mail data into Outlook .almost.

Exporting Outlook 2011 Mail

In Outlook 2011, perform an Edit Select All in the folder or Inbox you wish to Export. With patience, click hold the mouse until you see the number count come up on the cursor. Then move the cursor over a Finder folder window and release the mouse. Patiently wait while Outlook locks up churns from exporting the e-mails. There will be no progress bar. This will fill the folder with .eml files of all the e-mails.

Batch Convert Import Microsoft .eml files into Apple Mail

1. Use registered eml-2-emlx to batch convert the files into an .emlx-based .mbox which Mail supports. Stephan should get back to you within a day if you pay with PayPal.

2. Quit Apple Mail manually drop t he converted emlx-based .mbox file(s) from eml-2-emlx into the user s mailbox location (

/Library/Mail/Mailboxes). Apple Mail s import function will NOT import the resulting .mbox files from eml-2-emlx.

3. Open Apple Mail perform a Rebuild of the folder from within Apple Mail.

Individually Importing .eml Files Into Apple Mail

Apple Mail has full support for it s previous mail format standard. emlx. Apple Mail does not have database support for .eml files but supports reading opening (looking at) them. Apple Mail has an internal converter for .eml to .emlx files if you wish to save a .eml file into a Apple Mail folder. When viewing an .eml file in Apple Mail, you can perform Message Move To * Folder and it will do so.

Navigating to the Mail folder location in the Finder (

/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/* Folder.mbox/Messages) will show your newly converted .emlx files. However, doing this in bulk would be highly tedious and Automator doesn t support move to actions in Mail:

It would also be technically possible to create a folder in Apple Mail, and then drop .emlx files into the Finder location of that folder to manually import existing .emlx files into Apple Mail. Afterwards in Apple Mail, selecing the mailbox and doing Mailbox Rebuild would then update the Mail folder with your newly inserted .emlx files.

This project was originally come across from trying to recover a corrupted 20 GB Entourage 2008 Mail Database. It was found that Outlook 2011 could successfully import the corrupted Entourage 2008 Database. From Outlook 2011, an export was necessary to convert the user to Apple Mail.

I got tired of the slow clunkiness of Outlook for Mac (O4M). I was looking for a way to migrate archived O4M folders into Lion Mail. That s what brought me to this website in hopes of finding an answer.

After trial and error and several detours the answer is very simple and FREE!

Instead of dragging individual emails, drag the FOLDER to a finder folder and an MBOX will be created. This MBOX can then be imported into Lion Mail.

Under OS X (Lion) Mac Mail supports import of mbox files.
So here is how you do it,
Step 1. Open Finder and create a new folder
Step 2. Open Outlook for mac 2011 so that you can see BOTH windows at the same time.
Step 3. Drag the folder from Outlook to Finder and drop
Step 4. In the finder window you will find a file called something.mbox
Step 5. Open Mac Mail and Click on FILE then IMPORT MAIL BOXES Select the Files in Mbox Format option then open the folder where you stored your mails in step 3 and then it will import all those mails to Mac Mail.
You will find your imported mails under the word IMPORT, then you can move them within Mac Mail to the folders you want.

I tried this and it works. But you have to be running Lion

OK team I vve found the answer on how to export Outlook for Mac 2011 emails and get them into the latest version of AppleMail. A point to note: I just upgraded to Lion.

1. Create a new folder in Finder to put all your email folders into.

2. Open Outlook and click and drag each folder into the above Finder folder. Note: You will need to expand the trees so you drag each folder rather than just master folders.

4. Select the Inbox. Go File/Import Mailboxes and select the last option Files in format. Click Continue.

5. Locate the above Finder folder into which you ve dragged your Outlook folders. When you click the folder to import, it will do so.

6. Check in Mail and you will see the folder and it s email contents will have been imported and placed down the bottom of the left hand side in a folder called import.

7. Once you ve done the above for each Outlook folder you will then need to drag and drop inside Mail to rearrange the imported folders into the right order and heirachy.

Preserves all your emails, their dates etc in the correct order. Yahoo! Goodbye Microsoft.
