How to Become a Forensic Psychology

Forensic Psychologists apply psychology to criminal justice. Although similar in some aspects, forensic psychology is different than forensic science. One major difference is that forensic psychologists look deep into the immense psychological perspectives associated with the crime and apply them to the case so that justice might be served. They frequently deal with legal issues such as news law, and public policies, and are asked to determine the mental state and competency of the defendant at the time of the crime, and throughout the legal proceedings. Each of these issues blends law topics and psychology together, and is essential to the field of Forensic Psychology. Forensic Psychologists also use their knowledge of psychology to analyze a criminal s mind and intent, treat mentally ill offenders, practice within the civil arena, and consult with attorneys.

M.S. in Forensic Psychology
Psychology Legal Systems

Very few academic institutions offer degrees specifically focused on Forensic Psychology. Therefore, individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in Forensic Psychology should take an academic course load centered on criminal justice and psychology classes. Other classes that help prepare students for the field of Forensic Psychology include: cognitive, clinical, criminal investigative, social, and developmental psychology.

Some forensic psychologists choose to focus their careers exclusively on research, which ranges anywhere from learning how to improve interrogation methods to the detailed assessment of eyewitness testimony. Public policy is another area of interest for forensic psychologists. In this line work forensic psychologists act as researchers helping to design prisons and other correctional facilities. Most often Forensic Psychology includes areas between the conventional options of criminal justice (i.e, law enforcement, academic training, and corrections).

Most positions within this specialized area require more than a bachelor s degree to be successful. In fact, a doctoral degree is required in order to become a licensed psychologist. For those interested in perusing a career in Forensic Psychology, there are some important undergraduate classes that should be taken. These include: statistics, criminology, abnormal psychology, social psychology, and criminal law. One of the most valuable classes an undergraduate student could take would be motivational psychology. It s helpful for students to understand the motivation behind why people chose to act and think in certain ways early on in their education. Another helpful piece of advice for students interested in the field of Forensic Psychology is to enroll in a bachelor s of science program rather than earn a degree as a bachelor of the arts.

Persons who have earned M.A. degrees in clinical psychology typically work in institutions, with a Ph.D. holder supervising them. Because forensic psychologists with a master s degree can be paid less than those who have obtained a doctorate, many are often employed at correctional facilities. Master s degree graduates, who attended a college concentrating on cognitive, social, and developmental psychology, generally have more opportunities than those graduating with a clinical degree because they will not be evaluating patients. They can do research for non-profit organizations, or for the government, and may also involve themselves in policy making.

Over the last 20 years, the field of forensic psychology has maintained a steady growth rate. It is expected that over the next ten years, consultation, research work, and clinical practice in psychology and the law will continue to grow. Positions working with lawmakers, attorneys, and the courts are predicted to have the highest demand. It is also expected that jobs working in colleges and universities, teaching and doing research, will continue to increase. Changing laws and the development of new and innovative ways to deal with juvenile offenders has become popular subjects of exploration amongst forensic psychologists. Their expert advice can be vital to the decisions made regarding such delinquents. Those with doctorate degrees will have an edge over those with master s degrees and will have many more opportunities for employment. Those with only a bachelor s degree will find specializing in this field to be almost impossible.

Mrs. Percy and Mr. Williams believed in me. They were more than instructors, they tried to get to know you as a person and tried to understand your goals so they could push you towards them. And Mrs. Crawford from student services helped me find a job before I even graduated. She was dedicated to my overall success.

Jessica Kircher

Going to Keiser University was one of the greatest experiences in my life. All of my deans, professors, and staff made me feel that I was a part of something very special, and I am. I would recommend for anyone to get their education at Keiser University.

Belinda Haney

The two instructors that have impacted my life are Mr. Williams and Mrs. Percy. Both of them believed in my ability to become a great graphic designer, regardless of how I felt about my skills. I appreciate their motivation to get me to where I am today.

Justin Pugh

Beyond the curriculum of the courses, the lessons the instructors have taught me have paid dividends in my real work experiences. How to respond to criticisms, project and time management, interview skills, the list goes on and on. At the end of the day, they not only showed me how to design, but they taught me how to be a professional.

Ryan Bushey

If not for my education at Keiser I probably would not be where I am today, in both life and career. It is because of going to Keiser and the instructors I had that I joined a club started by Mr. Williams, The Lakeland Shooters Photography Group, which allowed me to venture into an amazing and very creative field that I use to enhance all aspects of my life.

Anthony Sassano

The Design program at Keiser University was filled with real world learning and hands on instruction… Based on the portfolio I created while a student at Keiser University, I landed a job in Graphic Design for a major online retailer immediately after graduation.

Ty Fitzgerald

Keiser University’s MBA program has renewed my mind, changed the way I think, and given me a new sense of purpose. The professors transformed my attitude and behavior, gave me the self-confidence I was lacking, and restored my energy.

Connie Sue Centrella

It has been great attending and graduating from Keiser University. Because of the small class sizes, I was able to build good relationships with classmates and professors. The PA professors care very much about the progress and success of the students and have been great advisors every step of the way through the program.

Annelise Merriner, PA-C

Attending Keiser University and getting my degree was the best decision I have ever made. The small class sizes and personalized attention helped me get my degree quickly. The hands-on experience and the education landed me a job at a neighboring law firm.

Dedrick Saxon
Natalie Dou

After being denied for several promotions at my current employer, I decided that I needed to further my education. Since graduating from Keiser with my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, I have been promoted and I am able to obtain positions that weren’t available to me before.

Laurie Williams

Keiser helped change my life by getting my education at the right school! I had been going to another school before, I dropped out because I felt that I was not getting enough information. When I found out about Keiser, I was pleased because the instructors were great.

Nadege Dor

My decision to attend Keiser University has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I chose to enroll in the Information Technology program The one-class-a-month pace helped incredibly with my self-discipline.

Marla Hadley

The BA for Business Administration at Keiser has to be one of the best in the nation. Keiser takes the basics that are taught at the Associates level and uses them to strengthen your skills and knowledge.

Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education

Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP)

About WRGP

The Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP) allows master’s, graduate certificate, and Ph.D. students who are residents of the WICHE member states to enroll in some 450 high-quality programs at 61 participating institutions outside of their home state and pay resident tuition. In fall 2016, 1,567 students enrolled through WRGP and saved an estimated $23.3 million dollars in tuition, and each student saved an average of $14,900 annually.

For a full list of WRGP programs, download this PDF handout .

For Graduate Students

To be considered for the WRGP resident tuition rate, apply directly to the department or graduate studies department of the institution where you want to enroll, and identify yourself as WICHE WRGP applicant. WGRP students must fulfill all the usual requirements of the department and institution concerned, and meet all admission deadlines. Contact information for each participating program is listed in our WRGP online directory .

For Graduate Programs Interested in Joining the WRGP Network

Institutions can nominate their graduate programs for participation in WRGP every fall. Programs that aren’t related to healthcare must be “distinctive,” meaning they must be offered at no more than four other institutions in the WICHE region (exclusive of California). WICHE is particularly interested adding graduate programs in healthcare (for fields not available through WICHE’s Professional Student Exchange Program) and on-the-rise sectors including microtechnology and nanotechnology; green building and building energy conservation; emerging media and communications; biotechnology and bioinformatics; computer and cyber security; alternative energy technology and sustainability; geospatial technology; market research, data mining, data science and analytics; homeland security and emergency and disaster management; user experience design and management; and elder care specialists.

WICHE s Student Exchange Programs

WICHE’s student exchange programs offer a broad range of higher education options for some 36,000 students each year at undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels.

Residents of WICHE states can gain affordable access to programs, states avoid costly and unnecessary duplication of programs and facilities, and colleges and universities can devote their resources to improving the quality of their educational offerings.

Division of Graduate Programs in Divinity

Master Of Divinity Graduate Program

The M.Div. program allows you to study a range of diverse theological disciplines, with the possibility of focusing on one area. For example, you may choose a concentration in the field of pastoral studies, such as youth ministry, preaching, or cross-cultural missions; or you can select an interdisciplinary concentration such as pastoral counseling, chaplaincy, or religious education.

The recognized standard credential for pastoral ministry is the Master of Divinity. Our graduate professional program provides the educational preparation for pastoral ministry and offers the option of developing one or more concentrations, specializations, or emphases.

La Sierra University also offers a program that allows you to earn your M.Div. and M.B.A. degrees simultaneously through a joint program offered by the Divinity School and the School of Business.

M.Div./M.B.A.

A combined program leading to the completion of both the Master of Divinity and Master of Business Administration degrees is offered jointly by the Divinity School and the School of Business. The program is designed especially for persons inter- ested in congregational leadership, church administration, church planting, and the use of entrepreneurial skills to enhance congregational and community life.

Twelve units completed in the Divinity School by a student enrolled in the program may be used to fulfill requirements for the M.B.A. program, and twelve units completed in the School of Business by such a student may be used to fulfill requirements for the M.Div. program, with the result that twenty-four fewer units will be required to complete the combined program than would be required to complete the two degrees separately.

A student wishing to complete the combined degree must be accepted into both the M.Div. and the M.B.A. programs. For further informa- tion, please contact the Divinity School dean’s office or the School of Business dean’s office.

WHY LA SIERRA: I was convicted to become a pastor in the Adventist church, and retired from the military. I was originally scheduled to go to another college. I chose La Sierra because the diversity of the students is unmatched in the Adventist system. That is important to me. And you can’t beat Southern California weather!

WHAT I GAINED: The fact that I attended La Sierra was an intense blessing because it opened my mind to new possibilities in the world, academically and intellectually, within the realm of theology. The faculty challenges you to think in new ways that drive you to look deeper into the Bible than you ever thought possible. It helps you to develop your theological foundation, giving you a firm start to be a pastor.

WHAT I AM DOING NOW: I am working as a youth pastor for two churches, and for the last five years we have gone to the Philippines to do evangelism. We have baptized over 1,000 people now and started a non-profit that helps Filipino children go to Adventist schools.

Master Of Theological Studies Graduate Program

Certificate In Ministry Graduate Program

The C.Min. program offers a first step into graduate professional studies in religion. If you have little or no theological training, the Graduate Certificate in Ministry is designed for you.

You may feel called to move into a leadership role in your local church, or maybe you’re exploring the idea of becoming a pastor. Both are good starting places for students in the Graduate Certificate in Ministry program. This 36-unit program is designed for those with little or no theological training, and can be completed in one year minimum, depending on your chosen pace.

The program provides basic foundational training, introducing you to the various disciplines that make up theological studies. It comprises the introductory one fourth of the Master of Divinity program required for those without any undergraduate religion or theology background. You can use the C.Min. as a first step to more advanced degrees such as the M.T.S. or M.Div.

Nurse Anesthesia MSN

(Last cohort was admitted in September 2016. Those interested in future terms should visit our DNP-Nurse Anesthesia page. )

Nurse Anesthesia is one of the Master’s options in the School of Nursing. Nurse Anesthesia practice is based on a continuum of care beginning with preoperative assessment and culminating with discharge from the recovery area.

Nurse anesthetists interview and assess each patient and formulate and implement a plan of care to best meet individual needs. Throughout the perioperative period, nurse anesthetists serve as patient advocates, provide emotional support, and collaborate with other health care practitioners to provide the optimum anesthetic experience.

The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing’s Nurse Anesthesia curriculum prepares registered nurses for entry into anesthesia practice. Graduates are prepared to administer a full range of anesthetics to a wide variety of patients across the lifespan. Through an integrated process of classroom and clinical instruction, students develop the didactic knowledge base and clinical skills necessary for safe and effective practice.

Students rotate through numerous clinical sites in Pittsburgh, the surrounding region, and now more distant sites to enhance clinical experiences. The UPMC Health System hospitals are world renowned in the areas of surgical innovation, trauma medicine, organ transplantation, research, and biomedical technology. Rotations including specialized experiences in cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, dental, regional anesthesia, organ transplantation, pediatrics, obstetrics, burns and electroconvulsive therapy enrich the curriculum.

Clinical rotations in community hospitals help to broadly prepare the graduate for practice in diverse settings. Students work directly with nationally and internationally renowned leaders in research, practice, and education. Upon completion, graduates are well prepared to safely manage simple to extremely complex patients.

Nurse Anesthesia coursework is offered in a full time format over 28 months and classes begin each August and January. Part-time study is also available for the core curriculum. Clinical practice begins as two days/week in the first term and increases in both intensity and frequency throughout the course of study. Clinical in the final two terms is 4-5 days/week and is interspersed with clinical conferences and preparation sessions for the Certification Examination.

Nurse Anesthesia considers registered nurses with a minimum of 1 year of full-time critical care nursing experience and a BSN degree. Academic transcripts, professional references, GRE examination results, and an essay must be submitted to be considered for an interview with faculty.

Students are accepted from a wide variety of critical care backgrounds and with a variety of career goals. Registered nurses who do not have a BSN may enroll via the RN Options choosing the RN-MSN path.

The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing Nurse Anesthesia Program MSN and MSN to DNP completion programs are currently accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs until 2019. The Program received a 10-year accreditation in 2009 (this is the maximum accreditation length) and received no citations or recommendations for change.
