Qualitative Data Analysis (Coding) of Transcripts

Before discussing codes or coding, let me give you the most comprehensive definition of code by Saldaña (2009). He states:

A code in qualitative inquiry is most often a word or short phrase that symbolically assigns a summative, salient, essence-capturing, and/or evocative attribute for a portion of language-based or visual data. (p.3)

Note: If you are doing a number of interviews, I recommend that you conduct a data analysis (coding) of each of the first two participants before continuing with subsequent interviews. This way you and your outside evaluator/auditor (if you are doing triangulation) can see the quality of the interviewing process to identify possible leading comments and/or incomplete participant responses. This pause in conducting interviews will give you greater confidence that you are conducting complete and accurate interviews. An excellent coding resource is Johnny Saldaña s book, The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers.

As I noted in my book, Secrets and Tips for Dissertation Completion, the use of computer software programs have limited value for analyzing qualitative data. These programs are good for tabulating words and phrases, but the programs cannot substitute for your own ability to identify specific meaning units in transcripts that are concepts, ideas, and beliefs. Therefore the following sections offer a more precise way of analyzing transcripts. I stated in my book:

There are a number of software programs available designed to analyze qualitative data. These are probably useful for simple tasks like tabulating words and phrases. However, meaning units identified in the transcripts/text are often complex strings of words and sentences that convey idiographic themes.

You, the researcher, are far more competent at seeing these complex ideas and perspectives in the text than the software. You conducted the qualitative interviews and you read the literature. Therefore, your own logical rational reasoning is superior. A simple spreadsheet will easily allow you to keep tract of meaning units and themes (p. 46).

When transcribing interviews. I suggest the following format in order to ensure ease of analysis:

  1. at the top of the first page, enter the code name of the participant
  2. at the top of the first page, enter the date the interview was conducted
  3. create a one inch margin on the left column
  4. create a two and a half inch margin on the right column
  5. double-space throughout the text
  6. number all lines
  7. number all pages

Here are some guidelines that will help you increase the accuracy and confidence of your findings:

  1. Type the transcripts double-spaced, with consecutive line numbers included for the whole manuscript. Include the interviewer s dialogue as well as the participant s dialogue. Include page numbers. Make the right margin two to two and a half inches wide so there is plenty of space to enter the idiographic themes.
  2. Assign a code name or number at the top of the first page of all transcriptions.
  3. Listen to the recordings (tape or CD) as you read the transcripts. This will confirm the accuracy of the transcripts and give you a deeper sense of the “natural meaning units” of the participants.
  4. As you read a transcript, identify each natural meaning unit (these are self-definable and self-delimiting expressions in the words of the participants) in the transcripts with shading or blocks or bold type. Be careful that each meaning unit conveys one singular thought or idea. Be alert when a participant uses the words “and” and “or.” This usually indicates more than one natural meaning unit.
  5. In the right margin of the transcript adjacent to each meaning unit, assign an idiographic theme that is as concise as possible. These themes should represent the essence of the participants meaning units. Vogt (2005) defines idiographic as individual, singular, unique, or concrete. (p. 150)
  6. In order to analyze the idiographic themes from each participant and discover the nomothetic themes (which are frequent and recurring), it is best to create a spread sheet. On the spread sheet you want to transfer the idiographic themes from each of the transcriptions. Recurring idiographic themes are renamed nomothetic themes. Vogt (2005) defines nomothetic as research that attempts to establish general, universal, abstract principles or laws. (p. 207)
Here are spread sheet common labels for the columns:
  • Column 1, Number of each theme
  • Column 2, Name of each theme (this one should be wide enough to enter phrases and sentence fragments)
  • Column 3, Name/code number of the first participant
  • Columns 4 through xx, Names/code numbers of subsequent participants
  • On the spread sheet in column 1, enter #001 for the first idiographic theme from the first participant. Do this for all themes.
  • On the spread sheet in column 2, enter the names of each of the idiographic themes from the first participant.
  • On the spread sheet in column 3, enter the page number/line number for each theme from the transcript of the first participant.
  • When analyzing the themes from all other participants, first look at the prior themes. If the themes already exits, just enter the page number/line number under the participant s name.If you discover a new theme, enter it at the end of columns 1 and 2. Also enter the page number/line number under the column for the appropriate participant.
  • Transfer all themes to the spread sheet .

How to use Excel’s Goal Seek analysis tool

Stop guessing! Susan Harkins shows you how to use Excel’s Goal Seek what-if analysis tool to achieve your goals.

By Susan Harkins | June 21, 2015, 8:10 PM PST

    Quick analysis tool excel

If you ask me, Excel’s what-if analysis tools are under-used. I often respond to readers with “Have you tried a data table?” Invariably, they don’t know how to implement the feature—sometimes, they don’t even know what a data table is. So, over the next few months, I’ll introduce you to Excel’s what-if analysis tools:

We’ll review the options, discuss when to use them, and then implement all three tools. Each example will be simple, but they will include enough information that you can start using these features on your own.

You might be asking what a what-if tool is; these tools show you the impact of making a change without impacting the actual data. This month, we’re exploring Goal Seek. This tool tells you how variables must change to achieve a specific goal.

I’m using Excel 2013 and Windows 7. For your convenience, you can download the example .xlsx or .xls file.

    Example 1

Technically, Goal Seek is a process of calculating a value by performing what-if analysis on a given set of values. For our purposes, Excel’s Goal Seek feature lets you adjust a value used in a formula to achieve a specific goal. Or, put another way, Goal Seek determines input values needed to achieve a specific goal. Use Goal Seek when you don’t have an exact value to use.

Calculating the terms of a loan is a good example of a what-if situation. What if the payment your lender offers is too high for your budget? Using Goal Seek can help by evaluating the payment formula and returning new values for the rate, term, and even the principal to fit your desired payment. Figure A shows a simple mortgage calculator where all variables are known: to repay a 6% loan on $200,000 over 15 years, your monthly payment must be $1,687.71. (Deposits matter, but we won’t complicate this example with more variables than we need.)

    A simple mortgage calculator.

You want the house, but your ideal payment is $1,200. You could spend a lot of time plugging in new rate and term values until you get lucky. A better solution is to use Goal Seek to determine the rate and term necessary to reduce your payment. First, let’s calculate the necessary rate, as follows:

    1. Select the cell that contains the formula. In this case, that’s E4.
    2. Click the Data tab. In the Data Tools group, click What-If Analysis and choose Goal Seek (Figure B). In Excel 2003, Goal Seek is on the Tools menu.

If Goal Seek doesn’t work, revisit the To value in step 3. Specifically, you must enter the desired payment as a negative value. To return to the original values, click Cancel in step 4 instead of clicking OK after viewing the result in the dialog. Or, you can click Undo on the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) after clicking OK. If Goal Seek can’t find a solution for you, Excel enables the Step and Pause buttons, which allows you to force further iterations to reduce the gap between the current values and your goal. (This is a more advanced feature that we won’t visit in this article, but you should know that it’s available.)

Now, you probably know that you can also lengthen the term of the loan to reduce the payment, so let’s use Goal Seek to determine a new term as follows:

    1. Select E4, click the Data tab, click What-If Analysis, and choose Goal Seek. In Excel 2003, choose Goal Seek from the Tools menu.
    2. Enter -1200 in the To value control and C4 in the By changing cell control.
    3. Click OK to see the results (Figure E).

This adjustment is as drastic as the rate adjustment. To get the payment you want at 6% interest, you need to double the length of your loan! Clearly, the best route is to seek a lower interest rate if possible. If that’s not possible, a home that’s priced lower might be in your future. Wait! Let’s try that too:

    1. Enter the term value of 180 in C4 (if necessary).
    2. Select E4, click the Data tab, click What-If Analysis, and choose Goal Seek. In Excel 2003, choose Goal Seek from the Tools menu.
    3. Enter -1200 as the To value, enter D4 as the By changing cell value, and click OK (Figure F).

Goal Seek didn’t give you the solution—only you can decide what to do with the information Goal Seek provides. Goal Seek offers quick insight.

    Example 2

Let’s look at another example. It’s as simple as the first but leans more toward an actual business situation than the first example. Figure G shows a simple quarterly profit sheet, and the story’s a bit grim: summer figures are down, and you have only one quarter remaining to meet your goal of $50,000 to stay solvent.

Quarterly profit sheet with $50,000 net profit goal.

Using Goal Seek, you can quickly learn what your fourth quarter revenue must be to reach your $50,000 profit goal. To accomplish this, do the following:

    1. Select E7, the cell that contains the formula (a simple SUM() function) that expresses your goal of $50,000, even though it’s not returning $50,000 yet.
    2. Click the Data tab, click What-If Analysis, and then choose Goal Seek. In Excel 2003, choose Goal Seek from the Tools menu.
    3. In the resulting dialog, enter 50000 as the To value.
    4. Enter C6 as the By changing cell value (Figure H).

With Goal Seek’s help, you can quickly see that your last quarter must generate $76,667 to meet your goal of $50,000. Knowing ahead of time what you face can help you determine new, perhaps more aggressive strategies for improving revenue.

    Meeting goals

Excel’s Goal Seek analysis tool is easy to use and can help you make decisions for the future based on today’s data. Thanks to Goal Seek, the future isn’t as unpredictable as you might think!

    Network Analysis Tools

To compete and win, businesses must increasingly operate with an expanding footprint. Today s global economic climate creates significant obstacles to managing the enterprise network. Offshoring, outsourcing, and telecommuting, as well as emerging markets worldwide, are driving the development of a virtual workforce that is widely distributed across a rapidly rising number of remote locations. A wide area network (WAN) is required to provide personnel at these sites access to the systems, applications, and data that often reside at the headquarters facility. Because WAN health is directly proportional to employee productivity, network analysis is a critical function.

    Applications of Network Traffic Analysis

Network analysis tools offer insights into what is happening not only over the wide area network (WAN), but also on the local area network (LAN) at each location. Network analysis pertaining to network traffic flows, protocols, and even individual data packets can empower the IT organization responsible for the network to keep it operating at peak performance.

Network traffic analysis yields perspective on WAN and LAN bandwidth utilization, trends, and even the switch ports in use and what is connected to each port. Network analysis provides protocol information that reveals vital views into the events taking place on the underlying network communications fabric. And data packets provide the most granular analysis about precisely how the WAN and LAN are performing with respect to response times and the overall quality of the end user experience.

When armed with these categories of network analysis information, IT can see remote network and application degradations before they become issues. They can tune bandwidth allocation and manage capacity more effectively. And with the network analysis information, they can improve network availability, track quality of service metrics, and minimize the mean time to repair problems when they arise through rapid detection and accurate isolation.

Key Considerations for a Network Traffic Analysis Tool

The challenge for IT is gaining access to the network information so they can conduct network analysis and respond accordingly. Ironically, at the same time the enterprise is growing, companies are striving for efficiency by centralizing and consolidating IT. The lack of local IT presence at remote sites complicates the execution of network analysis.

Realizing the benefits of network analysis for increasingly complex, widespread enterprises requires a network analysis tool that accounts for the following key considerations:

    • Accessibility The network analysis tool must include robust network analyzer hardware and software that can be deployed throughout the enterprise, but the network analysis tool must be controlled remotely. The cost, time, and impacts associated with dispatching IT personnel to identify and resolve anomalies are prohibitive and unacceptable.
    • Aggregation The network analysis tool must possess the scalability to collect WAN and LAN information from all remote sites, regardless of whether the network information is delivered directly or via a third-party service provider network.
    • Granularity The network analysis tool must provide vision into activities across all seven layers of the network. That means the network analysis tool must include not only network traffic analysis, but also the packet capture and decode capabilities for network packet analysis.
    • Visibility The network analysis tool must automatically discover and account for WAN and LAN updates so accurate analytics can be maintained without requiring IT staff to be sent to remote locations. The network analysis tool also must display data through graphs, charts, reports, and network diagrams, so IT can quickly and conclusively identify and resolve problems anywhere in the enterprise.

After Trump Trolls Perez On Twitter, New Democrat Leader Vows To Be Trump s Worst Nightmare

For an indication of the current state of US political discourse, look no further than twitter.

Shortly after Democratic establishment favorite Tom Perez defeated Keith Ellison as the new DNC Chair, the Republican National Committee issued a statement slamming Democrats for being out of touch with the American people, a sentiment shared once again by many Bernie Sanders supporters, who saw the loss of Ellison as a symbolic perpetuation of the status quo.

“By selecting a D.C. insider, Democrats only create deeper divisions within their own party by pushing a far left agenda that rejects a majority of their base outside Washington,” said chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.

“The DNC would be well-served to learn from two straight election cycle losses, encourage the leaders in their party to listen to what the voters want, and get to work with Republicans to fix the mess they created.”

However it was Donald Trump’s trolling of Perez on twitter over his victory, saying he could not be happier for Perez or the GOP, that was the punchline of the day.

“Congratulations to Thomas Perez, who has just been named Chairman of the DNC. I could not be happier for him, or for the Republican Party!”

Congratulations to Thomas Perez, who has just been named Chairman of the DNC. I could not be happier for him, or for the Republican Party!

Perhaps Trump’s compliment was sincere: on Wednesady Trump weighed in on the DNC chair election, praising Keith Ellison for his 2015 prediction that Trump could win the Republican nomination. “One thing I will say about Rep. Keith Ellison, in his fight to lead the DNC, is that he was the one who predicted early that I would win!”

And just like that, another classic Twitter war was born, because while Americans may await (a long time) for Trump’s economic plans to be implemented, they will surely be entertained.

This is lame-brained shit on both sides. Trump must have forgotten that he’s president of ALL the people, including democrats. I wish he’d start acting like it.

Perez also is murdering himself by being so parsimonious. What’s with these dems insisting on poisoning their own wells every time they speak? Perez needs to get outside of the metropolitan areas. He needs to get in touch dems who abandoned the democrat party. They had damned good reason to and he and all the other elected dems have no clue as to why. Their still operating under the impression that somehow Hillary’s loss was just some kind of fluke. It wasn’t. It was a blatant, club-you-over-the-head message.

Fly-over country is totally aware of just how fucked we are. Wouldn’t it be nice if these asshats on the coasts could discover why.

Tom Perez? Tom Perez. lol. wasn’t he the guy who headed the DoJ Civil Rights Division that dropped the case against the two Black Panther dudes standing in the door of the Philly polling place holding night sticks when Obummer was first elected?

Why yes, as matter of fact he was.

Apparently civil rights are something to be portioned out to favored citizens/groups as opposed to being enforced uniformly.

This motherfucker is going to be fun to skewer 😉

the cultural Marxism is strong with this one

He looks like a pizza aficionado?

Go geek boy go! You are going up against a real male of the species you try to dilute. You will lose.

“You Dims have morphed into full-blown fascists, you are already nightmarish.”

Very true. Problem is both Teams are full-blown fascist, and Trump is not exactly convincing me he’s not part of the machine with his global banker/global oil/MIC cabinet. We can only hope that both parties destory each other and leave us with something else.

We can only hope that both parties destroy each other and leave us with something else.

how about a benevolent dictator? This school yard twattering bullshit is starting to wear on my nerves.

Everyone needs to be educated about the proven abysmal effects of Keynesian economics. It’s a scam masquerading as an economic philosophy. Universities don’t get outside funding unless the ascribe to it. Until the people are enlightened about what money is and and it’s role, we will always get shitted on.

Gaddafi was a Benevolent Dictator and (((they))) destroyed his country and killed him because he wanted to use real money to trade oil. If Americans knew this they would have protested the bombing and no fly zone imposed over there. The fiat makes the matrix. If people have faith in the fiat, there will always be the matrix.

    Create a DNA Fingerprint

DNA. It s what makes you unique. Unless you have an identical twin, your DNA is different from that of every other person in the world. And that s what makes DNA fingerprinting possible. Experts can use DNA fingerprints for everything from determining a biological mother or father to identifying the suspect of a crime. What, then, is a DNA fingerprint and how is it made? Here, you ll find out by solving a mystery a crime of sorts. First, you ll create a DNA fingerprint (we ll supply the lab and all necessary materials). Then you ll compare this DNA fingerprint to those of all seven suspects to nab the perpetrator. Ready? Let s get to work!

    Launch Interactive

Assemble a virtual DNA fingerprint and use it to identify the culprit in a hypothetical crime.

In the last 15 years, DNA has played an increasingly important role in our legal system. Tissue evidence is now routinely collected during criminal investigations in hopes that it will provide genetic clues linking suspected criminals to crimes.

DNA profiles help forensic investigators determine whether two tissue samples — one from the crime scene and one from a suspect — came from the same individual. Fortunately, the genetic comparison doesn t require that investigators look at all of the DNA found in the tissue samples. That would take months or even years. Instead, by marking a small number of segments of DNA in one sample and then checking for the presence or absence of those segments in the other sample, investigators can say with some assurance whether the samples are from the same person.

How do they do it? Investigators use chemicals to cut the long strands of DNA into much smaller segments. Each segment has a specific length, but all of them share the same repeating sequence of bases (or nucleotides). The chemicals cut the segments at the beginning and at the end of the repeating string of nucleotides, so one segment might be ATCATCATCATCATC, for example, while another might be ATCATC. (The DNA segments used in forensic investigations are, of course, much longer than this.)

Investigators use a process called gel electrophoresis to separate these repeating segments according to length. Next, they introduce a small set of radioactive markers to the sample. These markers are segments of DNA of known length, with bases that complement the code of, and bind to, sample segments of the same length. The sample segment above (ATCATCATCATCATC), for example, would be tagged by a marker with the complementary code TAGTAGTAGTAGTAG.

Markers that do not bind to sample segments are then rinsed away, leaving in place only those markers that bound to complementary sample segments. Photographic film, which darkens when exposed to the radioactive markers, identifies the location of all marked sample segments. This film, then, becomes the DNA fingerprint that forensic investigators analyze.

The final step is a relatively simple matter of lining up the sample profiles side by side and comparing them for the presence or absence of segments with particular lengths. The more segments the two samples have in common, the more likely it is that the samples came from the same person.

Decision- making paradox – Wikipedia. The decision- making paradox relates to decision- making and the quest for determining reliable decision- making methods. It was first described in 1. MCDA) / multi- criteria decision making (MCDM), and decision analysis since then.

What is Real Statistics Using Excel? Real Statistics Using Excel is a practical guide for how to do statistical analysis in Excel plus free statistics software which.

Description. Since in the beginning it was assumed that the best method is not known, the problem of selecting the best method was solved by successively using different methods. The methods used in that study were the weighted sum model (WSM), the weighted product model (WPM), and two variants of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). It was found that when a method was used, say method X (which is one of the previous four methods), the conclusion was that another method was best (say, method Y). When method Y was used, then another method, say method Z, was suggested as being the best one, and so on. Two evaluative criteria were used to formulate the previous decision- making problem, actually, an MCDM problem. The first criterion was based on the premise that a method which claims to be accurate in multi- dimensional problems (for which different units of measurement are used to describe the alternatives), should also be accurate in single- dimensional problems.

For such problems, the weighted sum model (WSM) is the widely accepted approach, thus their results were compared with the ones derived from the WSM. The second evaluative criterion was based on the situation: alternative A, is evaluated as the best alternative, compared to the non- optimal alternative B. If B is replaced by a worse one, one should expect that alternative A remains the best alternative, under normal conditionsal where the weights of the two evaluative criteria in all possible combinations always add equal to 1. Obama – Housing Recovery – Crushes – Blacks, Young Adults – As Homeownership Rates Crash

Obama Housing Recovery Crushes Blacks, Young Adults As Homeownership Rates Crash

The Obama administration has a tendency to conflate the strong performance of Fed-induced assets bubbles with strong economic growth. Unfortunately, as is often the case these days, the hard data paints a slightly different picture than the narrative being pushed by Obama and his staff.

Per a new report from the Pew Research Center. and as our readers are undoubtedly aware, home prices have indeed recovered to pre-recession levels with a little help from Janet Yellen and crew.

That said, the Obama narrative breaks down from there as further research readily reveals that home prices have recovered despite a massive drop in overall homeownership rates.

Moreover, the folks that seem to have been hit the hardest are the ones that were the biggest supporters of Obama s Hope Change agenda. Per the table below, homeownership rates among Young Adults and Blacks are down 18% and 16%, respectively, since the peak in 2004. And while that s definitely a big Change, its somewhat lacking on the Hope.

But if mainstreet Americans didn t drive Obama s housing recovery then who did? Perhaps the following Bloomberg headline can help answer that question:

Yes, the benefits of Obama s housing recovery accrued to none other than his archenemy, Wall Street, which poured $100 s of millions into single-family houses on a weekly basis and $10 s of billions over the past couple of years.

Adding insult to injury, this massive pace of investment has re-inflated the housing price bubble, making it, once again, nearly impossible for Young Adults and Blacks to afford homes. And, unlike in 2007 when subprime lending basically erased the need for down payments, homebuyers today are forced to have some skin in the game before banks will blindly give them $100,000 s of dollars.

But, with the average American having about $3,000 in financial assets, we re not sure that s feasible.

But, as we always say, who needs facts when narratives are so much more fun.

+1 knuckles for the sarc. Golf will never be the same though.

Obama bascially from not doing anything threw all the blacks under a bus.

Who do you feel sorry for? Actually for Obama but why?

A 300 yard headshot on a fucking golf course is easy and there are probaby loads that could make that hole in one.

What is unravellng, and he tied himself into this not me, he thought he could stitch people up who were hoping they could improve their position.

Truth hurts, tag it as fake news I don’t mind the bullet is the truth.

How much ink has to be spilled on the housing bubble before the “tards” in government get it? The real answer is that Oligarchy will never back down peacefully.

Housing bubble has many authors: Clinton who signed GLB, thus undoing Glass Steagall. Clinton who gave MFN status to China. Wall Street who green- mailed american industry to off shore. China which then bought up U.S. treasuries with their excess dollars, instead of mainstreet American goods. China Wall Street gambit then holds interest rates artifically low.

Chicago and Libertarian hypnotism that markets find optimal prices, and that finance is part of the productive economy. (Finance is a drag – a parasite – a rentier class.) This hypnotism then blinds the sheeple.

Housing prices are pushed, as new bank credit channels toward this sector. Land and Housing are sticky in that new stock does not come on line at the same time as demand (money). Land locked housing areas that are fully built out, have prices that rise faster than those areas where new stock can be built. Hence, areas like Texas which have open land, are not impacted the same as other land locked areas.

Bernanke style QE keeps the housing debts in place, rather than writing them down to the ability of economy to pay. QE ends up swapping for MBS (mortgage backed securities) and other debt paper like TBills. This continues to hold interest rates low, the same as China gambit.

Robo-signing scandal is swept under the rug, as the evidence is erased after QE swaps.

Housing prices remain high, and jobs are exported.

No-Shit-Sherlock. The young cannot afford to buy homes, and start families.

Hudson puts this sort of junk economics in context:

If we take it to its logical conclusion (Junk Economics), where does it end? Totalitarianism?

It ends with economic planning shifting out of the hands of democratic government into the hands of the central bankers and the Treasury. They will do to Europe what they’ve done to Greece. They will do to the United States what they’ve done to the Baltics, who celebrate austerity and mass immigration and demographic collapse as if it is a miracle instead of economic disaster and suicide.

Have you ever looked at a document, presentation or dashboard and felt it was lacking something? Icons can take your project communications to the next level.

There is very little in the way of case studies or examples of how visual project management methods help project managers actually manage a project. Here are three projects where VPM techniques were used successfully.

The driving force behind visualization should be extracting the value for the data and information it presents. That is a top challenge facing all of us as program and project managers.

Is there really a career path to becoming a virtual PM? It may be the role you are looking for. It sounds exciting, challenging and could offer you the flexibility for a better work/life balance. How do you take the leap? What are the benefits? What skill sets are required?

Learning and the need to learn are hallmarks of the professional knowledge worker. To be effective leaders and help promote learning in our teams and organizations, we must embrace and model desired behaviors.

Generally, communication is taken for granted; we assume that everyone understands it. But this is not enough when implementing a project. When communicating on a project, you need information to be in a required format, to the right person, at the right time—which is, essentially, an efficient communication.

Project implementation is required to reach the desired outcomes in business. You develop a WBS, apply project management systems, particularly EVM and then settle down with project monitoring and control processes to reach the end result – but is that enough?
