Majors

Albright’s ADP curriculum features an accelerated seminar format with intense use of the Internet as well as additional computer technology. Interaction between students is emphasized and much of this collaboration involves applied group activities.

While traditional classes meet 40-44 hours per semester, Albright’s ADP courses meet for four hours per evening for five to seven weeks. Remaining class time is fulfilled by a combination of Internet usage and independent study.

Through a special partnership with Reading Area Community College, Delaware County Community College, Harrisburg Area Community College, Lehigh Carbon Community College, Montgomery County Community College, Northampton Community College, and Warren County Community College, most associate degrees (A.A. or A.S.) from these colleges transfer fully to Albright ADP (and acceptance is automatic if all Albright transfer admissions criteria are met.) Albright College offers a $2,500-3,200 Partner Scholarship based on GPA to graduates of these colleges. (Any applicant with an Associates Degree is eligible for a $2,500 scholarship.)

ADP offers bachelor’s degrees in:

Accounting: The accelerated program in accounting prepares students for careers in public and private accounting and in obtaining professional certifications. This major also provides students with a strong foundation for entering a graduate school program.

Business Administration: The accelerated program in business administration prepares students for a wide variety of careers in finance, banking, marketing and management. This major also provides students with a strong foundation for entering a graduate school program.

Crime & Justice: The accelerated program in crime and justice involves an analysis of criminal deviance and its roots, plus an in-depth understanding of our criminal justice system’s successes and failures. Unlike other criminal justice programs, students are not trained specifically for police work. Rather, students are educated in the academic study of crime, criminology and justice in preparation for a variety of positions within the criminal justice system.

Digital Communications: Albright College offers one of the only evening accelerated-hybrid programs in Digital Communications in the area. Focus on strategic communication across media platforms including publications, videos, and websites in the Albright College Digital Communications program. (This program is currently offered exclusively at our Reading location.)

Computer and Information Systems: The accelerated program in information systems is based on common structures and degree programs in the United States and Canada. It also meets the recommendation of the Association for Computing Machinery, which sets a variety of standards in technology fields, as well as graduate study programs.

Organizational Behavior / Applied Psychology: The accelerated program in organizational behavior / applied psychology prepares students for a wide variety of careers in social services, management, human resources, training and development. This major also provides students with a strong foundation for entering a graduate program.

Information Systems and Management: Albright s distinctive new major in information systems and management (ISAM) is designed to provide students with both the technical skills and the business acumen required to excel in information systems and business environments.

The UTEP Accelerated MBA (AMBA) is a fast-track, cohort style MBA option that combines quality, convenience, and affordability for the region s working professionals. Through the AMBA, students can complete their MBA degree in just two years by attending class twice a week on evenings and Saturdays. Students advance through the 48 hour curriculum in six week lock-step modules with a cohort of their peers. For Executives

The UTEP Executive MBA (EMBA) is an 18-month cohort format that serves business leaders with at least 5 years of managerial experience who seek to enhance their effectiveness, expand their skillset, and grow their network. EMBA courses are offered every other week (twice monthly) on Friday and Saturday with two courses being offered every 10 weeks. Classes are held from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Accelerated Bachelor’s Degree Online: Pros & Cons

Students love accelerated bachelor’s degree, and for good reason.

Accelerated programs consist of short online classes. A traditional college course lasts 16 weeks, but an accelerated bachelor’s program compresses courses into shorter five-, eight- or 10-week sessions.

You literally earn your degree faster by studying faster.

You take just as many courses to complete an accelerated bachelor’s degree as a traditional degree. But you learn faster in an effort to accelerate degree completion.

Accelerated Bachelor’s Degree Online

Two schools that offer accelerated programs are Western Governors University and Capella University. WGU offers a method of learning that allows students to fast forward through work where they are already proficient. Capella University has a revolutionary program called FlexPath ; that allows students to quickly get through classes where they have experience.

Jennifer Menges of Philadelphia chose to earn an accelerated online bachelor degree at Columbia College of Missouri. She says short, intense eight-week online courses are “just right” for her.

“Going the accelerated online degree route allows you to focus intensely on your education,” says Menges.

If you take two eight-week accelerated online courses five times a year, you’ve equaled a typical year of courses taken in a traditional year (10 courses), while only having to concentrate on two subjects at a time.

“When I was investigating online schools, I knew I wanted something accelerated,” says Menges. “I’m 36—I kinda need to get a move-on.”

Menges is not alone in feeling that faster is better when it comes to getting a college degree online.

Before jumping into the starting block, however, take a moment to consider whether this type of online education suits your learning style, career timetable and study habits.

To help you decide if accelerated online degree programs are right for you, we’ve compiled a checklist of advice and warnings gathered from online students and research.

Accelerated Bachelor’s Degree — Cons

Accelerated bachelor programs are not for everyone. They require a significantly larger investment of time and energy than traditionally-paced courses. While the promise of earning a degree fast is enticing, fast can quickly become frantic and frantic can lead to high degree drop-out rates.

Consider these factors:

  1. Interaction with your fellow students may be limited. In an accelerated online course, it will be even harder to learn from your peers and make new friends.
  2. Some subjects can be more difficult to learn on a compressed timetable. Math and computer skills in particular benefit from a longer learning period, some experts warn.
  3. Research suggests long-term recall of topics may not be as good if the material is learned in compressed sessions. If you plan on building upon the subject matter you are studying, this may be a major concern.
  4. Accelerated online learning can be jarring, especially if you are an adult learner with a job and family. If you don’t have the time or attention span to focus, focus and focus some more, an accelerated online degree program may not work for you.

That doesn’t mean condensing a semester’s worth of material in two months is impossible; in fact, many people prefer the faster paced courses.

Jennifer Menges’ husband Jon experimented with both short online courses and traditional 16-weeklong courses. In the end, he hands down preferred faster, accelerated courses.

“I feel like the shorter semester keeps you more focused because it’s kind of a more rapid-fire delivery method and learning platform. And it’s always in the forefront of your mind,” he says. “With the traditional semester and slower pace, it’s easier to not focus on it as much.”

Not everyone went the fast route and loved it. Eric Swilley, 41, had been out of school since 1991. He chose a nine-week online business law class at Troy University Online. That short course turned out to be more grueling than he had anticipated.

“The homework was absolutely ridiculous,” he says. He estimates reading and quizzes about the material took two to four hours per day. “If you’re an adult learner, that’s not a good option.”

If you’re uncertain whether an accelerated bachelor’s degree online is right for you, consider these tips:

Accelerated Online Degree Tips

  1. Evaluate homework requirements, such as reading load per week. Expect assignments to take two to three times more time per week than in a 16-week semester course.
  2. Consider what else is going on in your life. Getting married? New baby on the way? Starting a job? If so, it’s probably not a good time to commit yourself to a fast-paced online course.
  3. Research your professor. Is the professor available for questions? Will he respond to an email within 24 hours? Are there regular hours when you can contact him? How fast will assignments be returned?
  4. Prepare to excel. Students in accelerated online degree courses perform significantly better in tests than their peers in semester-long courses.

A Review of Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is one of the world’s most popular reading programs. The software program, commonly referred to as AR, is designed to motivate students to read and to assess their overall understanding of the books that they are reading. The program was developed by Renaissance Learning Inc. which has several other programs closely related to the Accelerated Reader program.

Although the program is designed for student’s grades 1-12, Accelerated Reader is especially popular in elementary schools across the country. The programs main purpose is to determine whether or not the student has actually read the book. The program is designed to build and encourage students to become lifelong readers and learners. In addition teachers can use the program to motivate their students by providing rewards that correspond to the number of AR points earned by the student.

Accelerated Reader is essentially a three step program. Students first read a book (fiction or nonfiction), magazine, textbook, etc. Students may read individually, as a whole group. or in small group settings. Students then individually take the quiz that corresponds with what they just read. AR quizzes are assigned a point value based on the overall level of the book.

Teachers often set weekly, monthly, or yearly goals for the number of points they require their students to earn.

Students who score below a 60% on the quiz do not earn any points. Students who score a 60% – 99% receive partial points. Students who score a 100% receive full points. Teachers then use the data generated by these quizzes to motivate students, monitor progress. and target instruction.

Accelerated Reader is Internet Based

  • Accelerated Reader is Internet based meaning that it can be accessed easily on any computer that has Internet access.
  • Being Internet based allows Renaissance Learning to automatically update the program and to store key data on their servers. This makes it much easier on a school’s IT team.

Accelerated Reader is Individualized

  • One of the best things about Accelerated Reader is that it allows the teacher to dictate how the program is used including the ability to limit students to a reading range that is on their level. This keeps students from reading books that are too easy or too difficult.
  • Accelerated Reader allows students to read on their own levels and to read at their own pace.
  • Accelerated Reader does not dictate which book a student reads. There are currently over 145,000 quizzes available to students. In addition, teachers may make their own quizzes for books that currently are not in the system or they may request that a quiz be made for a particular book. Quizzes are added continuously for new books as they come out.

Accelerated Reader is Easy to Set Up

  • Students and teachers can be quickly added to the system either through large batch enrollment or individualized addition.
  • Accelerated Reader allows teachers to customize individual reading levels. Teachers can get these reading levels from a STAR Reading Assessment, standardized assessment. or individual teacher assessment .
  • Classes can be quickly set up to allow the teacher to monitor whole class reading progress and to compare individual students within that class.

Accelerated Reader Motivates Students

  • Every quiz in the Accelerated Reader program is worth points. Points are determined by a combination of the difficulty of the book and the length of the book.
  • Teachers often set goals for the number of points each student must earn. The teacher then rewards their students by giving things such as prizes, parties, etc as motivation to meet their goals.

Accelerated Reader Assesses Student Understanding

  • Accelerated Reader is designed to determine whether or not a student has read a particular book and the level at which they understand the book. A student cannot pass the quiz (60% or higher) if they have not read the book.

  • Students who pass the quizzes demonstrate that they not only read the book, but they have a proficient level of understanding of what the book was about.

Accelerated Reader Uses the ATOS Level

  • The ATOS book level is a readability formula used by the Accelerated Reader program to represent the difficulty of a book. Each book in the program is assigned an ATOS number. A book with a level of 7.5 should be read by a student whose reading level is somewhere around the 7th grade and fifth month of the school year.

Accelerated Reader encourages Using the Zone of Proximal Development

  • Accelerated Reader encourages the use of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). The Zone of Proximal Development is defined as the range of difficulty that will challenge a student without causing the student to become frustrated or lose motivation. The ZPD can be determined by the STAR Reading assessment or the teacher’s best professional judgment.

Accelerated Reader Allows Parents to Monitor Student Progress

  • Accelerated Reader allows parents to monitor a student’s progress towards reading goals.
  • Accelerated Reader allows parents to conduct book searches.
  • Accelerated Reader allows parents to review results, view the number of books read, words read, and quizzes passed.

Accelerated Reader Provides Teachers with Tons of Reports

  • Accelerate Reader has about a dozen fully customizable reports. These include diagnostic reports, history reports; quiz usage reports, student point reports, and many more.

Accelerated Reader Provides Schools with Technical Support

  • Accelerated Reader allows you to receive automatic software updates and upgrades.
  • Accelerated Reader provides live chat support to answer questions and provide immediate resolution to any issues or problems you have with the program.
  • Accelerated Reader provides software and data hosting.

Accelerated Reader does not publish their overall cost for the program. However each subscription is sold for a one time school fee plus an annual subscription cost per student.

There are several other factors that will determine the final cost of the programming including the length of the subscription and how many other Renaissance Learning programs your school has.

To date there have been 168 research studies that support the overall effectiveness of the Accelerated Reader program. The consensus of these studies is that Accelerated Reader is fully supported by scientifically based research. In addition, these studies concur that the Accelerated Reader program is an effective tool for boosting students’ reading achievement.

Accelerated Reader can be an effective technological tool for motivating and monitoring a student’s individual reading progress. One fact that can’t be ignored is the program’s immense popularity. I have personally seen this program benefit many students, but I have seen the overuse of this program burn many students out. This speaks more to how the teacher is using the program, than it does to the overall program itself. The fact that the program allows teachers to quickly and easily assess whether a student has read a book and the level of understanding they have from the book is a valuable tool. Overall, I give the program four out of five stars. I believe Accelerated Reader has immense benefits for younger students, but lacks in maintaining its overall benefits as students get older.

Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program

The Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program is a 16 month, four consecutive semester program, which includes a summer semester. It is an on-campus program, with classroom, clinical, and lab components. MUSC is an academic health science center environment, and the other Colleges on campus are Medicine, Graduate Studies, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Health Professions. There are interprofessional academic and extracurricular activities.

The program focuses on the knowledge, skills, and values deemed essential for professional nursing practice in today’s multifaceted health care system. As a BSN-prepared nurse, graduates may work in a variety of health care settings, including hospitals, community agencies, health clinics, long term care facilities and private practices. Special focus is given to leadership, care coordination and communication skills. The baccalaureate program also provides a foundation for graduate study in nursing. MUSC offers the Doctor of Nursing Practice and Doctor of Philosophy degrees (DNP or PhD ). Our graduate programs are online.

The baccalaureate program focuses on the knowledge, skills, and values deemed essential for professional nursing practice in today’s multifaceted health care system. As a BSN-prepared nurse, graduates may work in a variety of health care settings, including hospitals, community agencies, health clinics, long term care facilities and private practices. Special focus is given to leadership, care coordination and communication skills. Teaching styles are diverse, and include classroom instruction, on-line instruction, and a combination of classroom and on-line activities. Many faculty use a “flipped classroom” approach, utilizing case studies and student discussions and problem-solving. Students are expected to be prepared and interactive for all teaching styles.

The student who enters the nursing program is prepared for upper division course work and brings knowledge of the humanities and the natural and social sciences as a basis for study in the nursing major. Students learn to apply concepts and principles to clinical practice and gain experience doing so with individuals, families, and populations in a variety of health care systems. Opportunities to practice nursing with persons of all ages, including those who are healthy as well as those who are experiencing health alterations are available. The leadership role of the nurse as a contributing member of the profession and the values and behaviors that reflect professional commitment to society are emphasized throughout the program.

Our students have diverse backgrounds and bring a richness to the learning environment. While approximately 80% of our students do have a bachelor’s degree in another area, it is not required to have a bachelor’s degree for admission. We do not have a preference for college majors and have not seen any difference in the performance of students with a science background versus a liberal arts background. Some students apply and are admitted with only the 60 semester hours of prerequisite coursework. MUSC does not offer the prerequisites, and we do not have a preference where they are taken as long as the school is accredited and the courses meet the minimum course content requirements.

The BSN Program has two application deadlines annually — September 15th for Spring admission, and January 15th for Fall admission. Admission is competitive. We do not practice a “waiting list and typically admit 80 students each fall and spring from a pool of 300-400 applications.

Grades are 75% of the overall admission decision-making. The cumulative GPA is weighted the heaviest, and this is all attempts at all coursework. MUSC does not have a forgiveness policy, so all attempts at all coursework is calculated into this GPA. The Admissions Committee also reviews related work or volunteer experience, military experience, references, and a short 100 word essay. No pre-admission testing is required, such as the GRE, SAT, or TEAS.

International Applicant s

Due to several distance-education components of this program, MUSC is unable to issue- I-20 forms to allow students to obtain F-1 student visas. Only U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and those holding other valid U.S. visas will be accepted.

Union University School of Nursing offers a 15 month Bachelor of Science in Nursing Accelerated (BSNA) degree track for non-nurses who have a bachelor’s degree in another field or are at least 24 years of age and have completed general educational requirements but did not previously complete a bachelor’s degree.

Admission Criteria

  • GPA of 3.0 for the last 60 hours of coursework
  • Grades of C or higher required for all Natural Science, Social Science, Math & English courses
  • If you are not a U.S. citizen, an international application must be completed and submitted with the BSN application.
    • All international transcripts must be evaluated by an accredited evaluating agency found at the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services’ website: www.naces.org

A Guide to the Best Dallas Accelerated MBA Programs

To earn an MBA you have to be committed. That means spending your time, money and your energy to attending class, completing homework and participating at all levels of the program. For some, two or more years is too much time to give when their job and family is also taken into consideration. That’s where an accelerated MBA program can be incredibly helpful. It allows you to complete your MBA as quickly and efficiently as possible—typically within one year—so you can get back on the job market and on with your career.

If you want to earn an MBA but you don’t want to turn everything in your life upside down to make it possible, then an accelerated MBA might be for you. To help, here’s our newest guide to the top Dallas accelerated MBA programs.

Cox School of Business – Southern Methodist University

The Cox School of Business at SMU was founded in 1920, and since that time has provided high-quality business programs, ranking in the top 30 in the world for research productivity. It offers four different MBA programs: a full-time. Executive and Professional MBA. plus an accelerated Fast Track MBA .

The Fast Track MBA is a 12-month program of concentrated curriculum. It’s an ideal choice for early career professionals who don’t want to take a long break from the job market. To graduate, students must complete 44 credits over three terms: summer, fall and spring. And though the MBA is accelerated, students can still concentrate their degree in one of eight areas: accounting, finance, general business, information technology and operations management, management, marketing, real estate and strategy and entrepreneurship.

Neeley School of Business – Texas Christian University

Founded in 1884, the TCU Neeley School of Business first offered an MBA degree in 1938. Now, the program offers six MBA programs including two accelerated options: the Accelerated MBA and the Accelerated Professional MBA. The class sizes at Neeley are small, with a 13-1 student to faculty ratio.

The full-time Accelerated MBA at Neeley is a 12-month program that takes place over the summer, fall and spring. It is designed for professionals who require minimal absence from the workplace. To graduate, students complete 36-hours of curriculum including 13.5 hours of core classes and 22.5 hours of electives. The electives can be used to tailor the MBA in finance, supply chain, marketing, management, energy, health care, real estate, entrepreneurship or consulting.

The Professional Accelerated MBA is an even more flexible program. This program allows MBA students to graduate in just 21-33 months while only taking evening courses. It’s an abbreviated 36-hour plan that is designed for professionals who already have a distinguished business career and do not wish to take any time off.

University of North Texas College of Business

The University of North Texas opened its doors in 1890 with the College of Business welcoming its first students in 1946. Since that time, the business program has received AACSB accreditation and offers two MBA program: the full-time MBA and the Accelerated Online MBA in Strategy Management .

The Accelerated Online MBA is a 14-month program that features eight-week courses and five available start dates. To graduate, students only need to complete 12 courses, though students without the necessary background may have to complete an additional 18 credits. The 36-hour program is designed to work around a student’s life and work schedule.

Professional MBA

Multiple business schools in Dallas also offer a flexible Professional MBA option. While not specifically an accelerated program, a Professional MBA is usually a slightly longer program with malleable class schedule options, including nights and weekends. These programs allow students to complete their MBA while still working full-time. Professional MBA programs are available at the Cox School, Neeley School, Naveen Jindal School and the University of Texas at Arlington .

Executive MBA

Similar to the Professional MBA, Executive MBA programs are for working professionals with multiple years of management experience. They’re flexible programs that require a minimum time commitment with classes offered on weekends and evenings. These programs can typically be completed in two years or less and are ideal for MBA students in the middle of their careers. Business schools in Dallas that offer Executive MBAs include the Cox School, Naveen Jindal, the University of Texas at Arlington, the Hankamer School at Baylor University and the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas.

Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN)

Career changers are welcome with our second degree nursing program.

Looking to change careers? Let us put you on a fast track to success. Our Accelerated B.S. in Nursing program (formerly called PATH) allows students who have a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing to complete our B.S. in Nursing program in 14 months. Studying full time, you will begin in a cohort and advance in the program with your peers while learning from dedicated faculty who offer a comprehensive approach to the didactic, clinical and research components of the program.

The Accelerated Nursing degree program only offers a summer start, and the application deadline is January 15. Specific criteria are required for admission, including prerequisite courses, which must be successfully completed by the time a candidate applies to the program.

When you successfully complete Adelphi’s Accelerated Nursing program, you will be eligible to take the national NCLEX-RN licensing exam and can pursue practice in a variety of healthcare settings. Wladimir Louis-Charles ’12 is just one of the many successful graduates of the program, who have made a significant impact in their communities.

Due to the intensive nature of the course work, we strongly discourage outside employment during the accelerated program.

Program Requirements and Prerequisites

Motivated students from any undergraduate major are eligible to apply to this program. However, students who have not completed the required prerequisite courses as part of their prior undergraduate program must successfully complete those courses prior to applying.

Before taking nursing classes, you must have completed the following 10 courses (you may have already taken many of these for your first degree; some restrictions apply).

  • Anatomy and Physiology I and II (within 10 years)
  • Microbiology (within 10 years)
  • One semester of Inorganic Chemistry and One semester of Organic Chemistry, or Chemistry 109 (within 10 years)
  • Pathophysiology (within 10 years)
  • Genetics (within 10 years)
  • Statistics
  • Developmental Psychology through the Lifespan
  • Nutrition (2-credit nursing course)

A grade of C+ or better must be achieved in all prerequisite science courses. Students who receive less than a C+ in one required prerequisite science course may repeat that course. Any student who receives below a C+ in more than one prerequisite science course would not be eligible for the Accelerated Nursing program.

An academic adviser in the Office of University Admissions will review your transcript to determine if prerequisite courses taken at another institution are transferable.

Our RN to BSN and 12-month Accelerated BSN programs are rooted in excellent teaching, personal attention and a sound curriculum. Both programs are offered at our Jersey City campus and our Wall location to accommodate the flexibility needs of our busy students.

NJCU also offers a part-time Master of Science in Nursing Education (MS) Degree Program as well as a Post-Master’s Certificate Program. Students can complete the 37-credit MS program in approximately two years, and may begin the program in either the spring or the fall. The program is designed to provide a solid foundation for nurses to transition to careers as nurse educators.
